The Age Green Campaign Initiative(AGCI), was honored to be officially invited by the Federal Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with RUWES Nigeria (Renewable Energy Program for Women and Youth Empowerment Scheme), In celebration of the 2025 World Environment Day. It was a powerful and action-driven event under the theme “Plastic Waste, the Currency for Women Empowerment –# Endingplasticpollution, where key stakeholders committed to clean energy, climate action, and sustainable development were all present.
The event commenced with a press briefing by the Honorable Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, who emphasized the critical need to combat plastic pollution through inclusive strategies that empower women and promote sustainable alternatives.

The gathering brought together wide range of partners including the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP), NNPC foundation, Oando Clean Energy, Norwegian Embassy, Ajinomoto, Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and many others. Among these partners was the RUWES- Renewable Energy Program for Women and Youth Empowerment, which also played a supporting role at the event.
The day’s program at Schatz Parks and Resort featured a diverse range of engaging activities-Exhibitions, networking and strategic dialogues on energy transition, waste management, and inclusive climate policies, as well as School Quiz Competition and Innovation Display, where Participating schools showcased creative alternative uses of plastics, promoting sustainability and innovation. After a competitive round, Community Secondary School Asokoro emerged winner, receiving the top prize for their outstanding presentation.
The event was graced by the presence of Age Green Campaign Initiative, a key environmental NGO, with their Executive Director, Engr. Simeon Odoh, in attendance. The organization reiterated its support for gender-inclusive climate action and sustainable waste management in Nigeria.The NGO also reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to Nigeria’s Environmental goals and looks forward to more strategic collaborations with public and private partners in the sector.

A Keynote Address by the honorable minister
In his keynote address, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal stressed the urgency of protecting Nigeria’s ecosystem. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting initiatives that transform waste into wealth, particularly those that provide economic opportunities for women and youth.

Signing of MOU: A Memorandum of Understanding was officially signed between RUWES Nigeria and Environmental Expressions Limited, solidifying a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing plastic recycling and women empowerment initiatives nationwide. The Honorable Minister, joined by Engr. Habib Ahmed, proprietor of Environmental Expressions Limited, officially launched this pioneering project designed to empower women through sustainable waste management practices. A compelling video highlighted the transformative impact of the RUWES Women initiative, documenting real-life stories of women turning plastic waste into viable sources of income.

Cultural Entertainment: The event also featured a vibrant performance by a cultural troupe, celebrating Nigeria’s heritage and drawing attention to the role of traditional communities in environmental protection.
Plastic Recycling Exhibition: Attendees witnessed a display of recycled plastic products, viewed by the Honorable Minister and other dignitaries, showcasing practical outcomes of circular economy practices in local communities.

Video Presentation of ECOWAS @50: As part of the broader African integration and environmental cooperation, a video presentation celebrated 50 years of ECOWAS and its commitment to sustainable development.
World Environment Day 2025 in Abuja, stood out as a powerful reminder that plastic waste, when managed sustainably, holds economic potential — particularly for women. The call to action was clear: empower women, end plastic pollution, and protect our shared environment.
